At PFL Newcastle, the marquee will feature boxing world champion Savannah Marshall fighting in her home of England in her first professional MMA fight. On the other side of Marshall will be Brazil’s Mirela Vargas who will be in her third professional fight, but her first fight with the PFL.

With a 7-second knockout win already on her resume, Vargas won’t be afraid to stand and trade with Marshall, and is looking to send a message to the PFL by securing a finish.

In an interview with Calf Kick Sports, Vargas discussed what it was like to get the call from PFL, fulfilling a promise to her coach who has since passed away, and her focus on getting a finish in her promotional debut.

Getting the opportunity to fight Marshall in a massive main event opportunity, Vargas opened up on the moment she received the call.

“I couldn’t believe it when I got the phone call, I got very emotional because it was a dream for me to come fight in the PFL. I’m very grateful, I think it will be a really good fight. It’s her debut and I have a few fights under my belt, and I think this is going to be good.”

Despite her opponent’s championship boxing pedigree, Vargas said while she believes she’ll certainly have the grappling advantage, she won’t be an easy out on the feet for Marshall.

“I think definitely grappling will be my advantage, however I do train with some heavy hitters as well, world champions. I think it’ll be hard for her to knock me out, I’m tough, and I’m training with people that are bigger than me. Definitely, I think my advantage is on the ground. I’m not waiting for the judges either, I’m going for that finish.”

The PFL Newcastle main event won’t just be a big opportunity for Savannah Marshall to showcase her move to mixed martial arts, it will also provide an opportunity for Mirela Vargas to cement her place with the PFL.
